Great Pub Food
Motivated by being able to create dishes using great fresh & local produce we are proud to have a fantastic team in our kitchen that is led so ably by Executive Head Chef James (on the left) with our 2 young Chef Apprentices Aaron & Blake to his side and then Junior Sous Chef Adam and 2nd Chefs Tania and Stuart. Since this photo was taken we've expanded the team even more to include Nick our new Chef de Partie, Steve our Commis and Dunitru our great KP.
Traditional, Quality and Value are key words in every aspect of our business, and James and his team believe in going the extra inch every time - particularly where our food & menu's are concerned.
As we enter Autumn our minds and menu's switch to hearty and warming, comforting foods: Home-made pies, luscious stews and fantastic local winter vegetables to use. Lunchtime offers great meat & seafood platters, Ham & Cheese platters, home-made pate's platters - all served on slates or lovely wooden platters. What about sharing a tasty Camembert studded with Rosemary & Garlic & served with fresh crusty bread?
Alongside that is always a great freshly made soup of the day, Fresh Salcombe crab open sandwiches, home made fish fingers, Coronation Chicken are just a few of the dishes we offer till 5.30 alongside great pub classics like Sausage & Chips, Ham, Eggs & Chips or how about a homecooked Curry?
Evenings see a switch to something a little more elegant like Sirloin or Fillet Steaks from our local farmer, Venison cooked to perfection, slow roasted Double Baked Pork or maybe a Chicken, Chorizo & bean stew. These are just a few things on our menu at the moment, but vegetarians you're not forgotten either - currently we are cooking for you a great Mushroom Wellington with garlic & rosemary roasted Shallots as well as a rich Taglietteli. In fact anyone with a dietary requirement outside of what we offer on the menu can almost always be catered for - you just have to ask.
We are all incredibly proud that our food is sourced from within the wonderful larder of the West Country wherever possible. It's all cooked fresh to order and we even make our own Ice Cream!
For example, the Beef we use comes from Graham Letherbridge’s farm – Holesome Park - less than 5 miles away, he has mostly pedigree British White cows and some Angus Cross. The animals are reared on natural diets which can include grass, turnips, hay, home-grown cereals (wheat and barley). They are grazed on land at Soar Mill, Hallsands and Bolberry. All of this leads to the meat having a succulent full flavoured taste. Our Chefs here trim and cut the Beef by hand, producing joints and prime steaks
Venison when we use it is farmed at Plympton, and our Pork for Sunday roast comes from the great Maunders Butchers in Kingsbridge High Street - moist, fabulous and bags of flavour!
We’re right by the sea so of course we use as much fresh Fish as possible, and sourced from one of the most respected firms in the business; Kingfisher of Brixham, they are as passionate about Fish as we are!
With almost 30 years in the industry, Kingfisher has become a kite-mark for quality fish, known throughout the country. They source their fish from Brixham, Plymouth, Looe and Newlyn, trading some of the finest produce in the West Country and they
supply fish from sustainable sources. The Crab we use is only ever fresh from Salcombe Crab Traders.
The milk, cheese and eggs we use are sourced from the West Country as much as possible and some of the eggs are from the Chickens at the top of the pubs garden! Last but not least our Cheese is from Taw Valley Creamery in North Tawton, the Cornish Yarg is from Lynher Dairies in Cornwall and the Devon Blue is from Ticklemore Cheese in Totnes
We also work hard to help support our environment by re-cycling food waste, glass, cardboard and paper and we use energy efficient light bulbs where ever possible
Children have their own menu and a variety of toys and books to keep them amused, and you can be sure that their food is made from the same fresh ingredients as your food is from! We serve food every day (except Christmas Day) from 12 noon through to 9 in the evening
